How to Walk into the Spring Conference
What do I wear?! How do I present myself? How do I make myself memorable? When it comes to social events, especially networking ones, the anxiety can overwhelm you. Everyone gets it. But, hopefully, after reading this you’ll have relaxed a bit and gained some ideas on how to step into the Spring Conference.
There is no ‘right way’ to present yourself. Everyone has their own ‘brand,’ and trying to be someone else’s is the wrong attitude for going into the Spring Conference or any networking event. It can be difficult to find and define what your ‘brand’ is, but my advice is always ‘fake it til’ you make it.’ Even if you have no idea what you’re interested in and can’t even decide what you want to eat for dinner, as long as you show up with a little bit of confidence and eagerness to learn and grow, you’ll be fine. Whether that confidence comes from a ‘good luck’ text from mom or a pep talk in the mirror, you’ll do a rockin’ job of presenting yourself.
Another way to gain the confidence that you need to go up to CEOs or learn more about an internship opportunity you’re interested in, is to know that you look awesome. Whether that means pulling out the new pants-suit that you got over spring break, or showing off the new haircut you got, sometimes dressing the part gives people the motivation to feel empowered. Finding an outfit that incorporates color and texture can always help you feel more relaxed and make you stand out in a crowd. I am not saying that you should show up in a neon orange dress, but as much as black goes with everything, try mixing things up a bit and getting a patterned blazer or colored loafers/heels!
The Spring Conference is a tool for you. Use it in the way that best fits you, whether that be to learn about your interests or to find companies that fit within your field, make the most of your experience. Remember to bring a good mindset, an eagerness to grow, your best look, and a kind smile!
