Interview Do's & Don'ts

by Sarah McGinity

The interview is a key component to securing the dream internship or job. Interviews allow employers to match your personality and interpersonal skills with the facts and experiences you list on your resume. Before your next interview, make sure you remind yourself of these Do’s and Don’ts, so you can leave a stellar impression on your interviewer!

Do’s:

Research the Company or Organization:

  • Understand the goals and values of the company or organization

  • Read up on any current events involving the company, including their accomplishments and awards, as well as industry trends

    • If you know who is interviewing you, also feel free to research their career!

  • Know the products and services offered by the company or organization. What makes them stand out?

Dress Professionally:

  • When in doubt, dress in business professional attire! A matching suit set with a solid, neutral colored top is always a safe option when dressing for interviews. Better to be over than underdressed!

    • That being said, always keep the role you are interviewing for and the culture of the company in consideration. In more creative industries, fun pops of color and statement pieces are more often allowed!

  • Business casual, business chic, business professional – what’s the difference?! Stay tuned for our next newsletter to learn some more!

Ask Questions:

  • “What does a typical day look like?”

  • “What are the types of projects and tasks that I would work on?”

  • “What is your favorite part about working for this company?”

  • “Has your role changed within your time at the company?”

  • Look at this list for more information!

In the age of COVID-19, know Zoom etiquette!

  • Look into the camera when speaking.

  • Turn off your computer notifications! Limit any potential distractions!

  • Reliable internet / Wifi connection

  • Bright room with good lighting

  • Device is charged, updated, capable of using Zoom

Don’ts:

Limit your use of filler words

  • Constant use of phrases like “Um”,“Ah”, “Uh”, and “You Know” may make you come off as unprepared

  • Instead of using filler words, take a slight pause to think before responding to a question!

    • Also, don’t be afraid to practice your answers beforehand!

Don’t answer with a simple “Yes” or “No”

  • Make sure to explain and elaborate your answers because the whole point of the interview is for the interviewer to learn more about you!

  • One word answers may make you came off as not caring or unknowledgeable

Don’t Speak too Quickly or Softy:

  • It is important to come across as confident, knowledgeable, and sociable!

  • You’re smart and qualified! Express your knowledge and skills in a confident manner!

Don’t Interrupt the Interviewer:

  • Maintain respect and active listening

  • May come across as not caring what the interviewer has to say by interjecting
